Judith Margolis Book

Essays Verbal & Visual

Israeli-American artist Judith Margolis combines spirituality with politics, illustrating texts for “Praise Emptiness” at the request of Philip Miller. The book covers diverse topics including Judaism, Buddhism, feminism, and free will, reflecting their view of Ultimate Truth as multifaceted and unknowable. It includes weighty philosophical texts alongside Judith’s integrated reflections and paintings.
Initially, I received Philip’s essay and read it in its entirety. His philosophical insights were intricate.
I highlighted the important themes in the text.
Later, I met with Judith numerous times to go over her various artworks and to connect those that resonated most with Philip’s texts. Since Philip and Judith come from similar backgrounds, they share many overlapping themes.
Together, we sought to imbue the book with a unique atmosphere resonating with exploration, creativity, confrontation, expression, and creativity. I sought the right grid layout to accommodate the texts and notes (both comments and art works captions) alongside the images, aiming to present a philosophical book with profound text while integrating an artistic spirit.
The book evokes a blend of vintage and contemporary aesthetics, imbued with a unique and intriguing atmosphere.
Working with Judith Margolis was a great pleasure and adventure.
